Descendants of Middleton "Milton" HARRISON

Second Generation

3. Lewis "Luiss" HARRISON (Middleton "Milton" ) was born 1826 in Perry Co., AL.

Lewis married Penella "Peania" Horn on 26 Mar 1843 in Perry Co. AL.

I did find in the AL marriage record, at the Gulfport Family History Center run by the Latter Day Saints, that Lewis Harrison married Pelenia Horn on 26-March-1843 in Perry Co. AL. I think Pelenia Horn is the same person listed as Lewis wife in the Newton Co. MS 1860-census spell Pennela. This is about the right time for Lewis marriage as his oldest son Francis M. was born in 1846. I would think her name was Penelope, cause this was a common name for girls in the early 1800's. Find Luis Harrison age 34 b. AL in the 1860 Newton Co. MS census with real estate value at $2,000 and personal estate value at $1,300. During the slave years the personal estate value could mean that this person had slaves. His wife name was Pennela age 35 b. AL. They had three children the oldest being Francis Marion Harrison age 14 b. AL, Margaret Harrison age 7 b. MS, and Benjamin Harrison age 5 b. MS. On the 1858 Newton Co. Tax Roll Lewis Harrison paid state tax of $0.80 and tax for Military school of $0.51. The Tax record also shows that he had one Slave under the age of 60. Unable to find Lewis/Luis, Pennela, Margaret or Benjamin Harrison in the MS or AL 1870, 1880 or 1900 census. We have no 1890 census as a fire in Washington D.C destroyed them. I do not know why any of these did not show up in the 1870, 1880 or 1900 census, it is possible that he and his family moved to another state, or all or part of the family had died. I did find at the Department of Archives and History in Jackson, MS that a Lewis Harrison signed up for the Confederate, Company D, First Batt'n--State Troops, Mississippi Infantry for 30 days and to be served from 23-Aug-1864 to 14-Sept-1864. He served under Col. J.J. Thornton. Francis Marion Harrison signed up for 30 days and he served from 14-Aug-1864 to 14-Sept-1864 in Company B, Third State Troops Mississippi Cavalry of the Confederate Army. My sister told me the cemetery that Lewis and his family were buried in was farmed over in the 1930's. It is not known when Lewis and his family died or how they died. I have been told that a fever hit Newton county, MS in the late 1860's killing many family members. This is possible what happen as we check the census in 1870 and 1880 in about six states for Lewis, Pennela, Margaret and Benjamin. The 1840 Perry County, AL census listed a Middleton Harrison with a son the correct age for Lewis Harrison. This is the same Middleton that we thank is the father of John Dennis Harrison.

John was a Baptist Preacher and Farmer. John Dennis was taught to read and write by Millie Alice Brooks and after they were married, he read constantly. He was an ordained Baptist Minister. In the 1870 and 1880 census it showed that john and Alice lived in Newton Co., Ms next to Millicent Brooks. In the 1900 census it showed John and Alice in Wayne Co., MS. We know they were living in Wayne County, MS in 1894 as a child name Franklin born 22 SEPT 1893 died 8 JAN 1894 was buried in Shirley Place Cemetery, Wayne County, MS According to Records in Wayne County Court House, an old ledger that H.
